First Warm-Up

Welcome to UnderTheBar!

If you love hockey, you know that not all of us who play for love play for a living.

And not of all us who play for fun are all that good.

Okay, some of us are.

But I’m not one of them. And I don’t care.

There’s way more to hockey  — and a love of hockey — than just being good at it.

Hockey is more than the game that gets served up to us by professional leagues.  And there are more ways to enjoy a game than being able to do it for a living, or being able to compete at the highest levels.

UndertheBar is a hockey blog for all the other reasons we play.

It’s a blog about about playing a game for the sake of the game. It’s about playing and training just for the sheer pleasure of it. It’s about loving the game because of all the reasons that matter to us, whatever those reasons are.

Maybe it’s the feel of the skates. Maybe it’s the sound of the ice.  Maybe it’s the people we get to hang out with. Maybe it’s a game that helps us forget all the things we worry about in our day to day lives, and forces us to focus on just the now, just the moment.

And maybe it’s just fun.

Topics? Have Your Say…

I’m  not sure what we actually will cover on this blog, but these some of the things I think *I’d* like to cover:

  • profiles and interviews of recreational players
  • reviews of gear for those of us who have to buy our own :)
  • tips for people who think they want to play hockey, but don’t know how to start
  • tips for recreational level players
  • observations about goaltending
  • observations about training when you’re not an elite level athlete
  • stories about playing in rec leagues, learning a new sport, being terrible, being injured, and juggling a love of hockey with all the other things we want to do. Like eat and work and spend time with our loved ones and stuff.

Those will be a start. I’ll post this list on the About page, too, so we don’t forget.  I’d love to hear what you’d like to see.

So Here’s To Life Played Under The Bar…
